Students are placed in TAKS Lab either because they failed the TAKS test last year or because their scores were borderline. Our goal is to improve their skills, whether they're in mathematics, science, social studies or English language arts. Most of our students concentrate on math, both algebra and geometry. They work on computers every day, on a program the district bought called A+. Each lesson is divided into 3 parts: a study guide, practice problems, and a test. They must take notes on the study guide and work out all the practice problems on paper before they take the test. They are required to keep these in a folder to be turned in at the end of each six weeks. These may also be used when they take the test. Notebooks count as 30% of their six weeks grade. They're required to make an 80 on the test before they go on to the next lesson. They should master at least 3 lessons per week. If a child is sick, please call the school and we can print these lessons and send them home. That way the student won't get behind. A+ cannot be accessed from home. Graphing calculators are furnished by the school. This year we are also recommending that students access a program called Khanacademy, which offers tutorials on any math topic imagineable. This is a free website that can be accessed from home. We advise they use Khanacademy after they've taken their study guide notes and if they feel doubtful about their ability to work the practice problems. The tutorial should make them feel more comfortable. And, of course, I'm'available to help them with anything they're finding difficult. Reports will be sent home to you every three weeks to advise you of your student's progress. The report will include the names of the lessons, the grade your student made and the time he/she spent on that program. If you have any questions, please call the school either to talk to me over the phone or to set up a conference. My conference period is 2:40-3:35. My e-mail is
